How Volt Value estimates eBike values

Volt Value is a rule-based calculator, not an appraisal and not a machine learning model. Every constant it uses is published on this page, so you can check the math yourself. It applies to electric bikes only.

Step one: brand tier retention

Brand sets the depreciation curve. Premium bikes with dealer support and parts availability hold value best, direct to consumer brands sit in the middle, and unbranded or discontinued bikes fall fastest.

• Premium mid-drive: first year 25 percent loss, 15 percent per year after, floor 18 percent of original price, battery or pack replacement $900. Brands: Specialized, Trek, Gazelle, Riese & Muller, Tern, Cannondale, Giant.
• Mid-tier and lifestyle: first year 28 percent loss, 18 percent per year after, floor 16 percent of original price, battery or pack replacement $700. Brands: Super73, Murf, Juiced, Ariel Rider, Blix.
• Direct to consumer: first year 32 percent loss, 20 percent per year after, floor 15 percent of original price, battery or pack replacement $500. Brands: Rad Power Bikes, Aventon, Lectric, Ride1Up, Velotric, Heybike.
• Generic or unknown brand: first year 35 percent loss, 22 percent per year after, floor 15 percent of original price, battery or pack replacement $550. Brands: .

Step two: mileage

Mileage bands adjust the depreciated base for wear on the drivetrain, brakes, and bearings.

• Under 500 miles: 105 percent of base.
• 500 to 1,500 miles: 100 percent of base.
• 1,500 to 3,000 miles: 93 percent of base.
• Over 3,000 miles: 86 percent of base.
• I do not know: 97 percent of base.

Step three: battery health

The battery is the single largest swing factor. A degraded pack subtracts a share of the real replacement cost for that brand tier rather than a percentage of value, because a pack costs what a pack costs regardless of what the bike is worth. I never open, puncture, or disassemble a battery, and no owner should either. A swollen, leaking, or heat damaged pack goes to the manufacturer or a certified recycler.

• Holds full range: 100 percent of value, minus 0 percent of the tier pack replacement cost.
• Noticeably less range than new: 97 percent of value, minus 35 percent of the tier pack replacement cost.
• Barely holds a charge: 95 percent of value, minus 100 percent of the tier pack replacement cost.
• I do not know: 97 percent of value, minus 30 percent of the tier pack replacement cost.

Step four: condition

• Excellent, looks nearly new: 108 percent of value.
• Good, normal wear: 100 percent of value.
• Fair, needs service: 85 percent of value.
• Rough or not currently rideable: 62 percent of value.

Step five: the range

The point estimate is published as a range of plus or minus 12 percent, and it never falls below the brand tier floor, which represents parts value. Values are rounded to the nearest $25.

Step six: the Coastline Fix buy-now number

The range above is a private party number: what a patient owner gets selling the bike themselves. The Coastline Fix buy-now range is that range reduced by exactly 30 percent, top and bottom. Nothing else changes, so you can check it with a calculator. The discount pays for the things we take on: the wait, the listing and the messages, door pickup, and the repairs a used bike usually needs before it sells again. Data sources

Two inputs: Coastline Fix internal repair and resale records from North County San Diego covering 2024 through 2026, and published depreciation norms for light electric vehicles combined with observed regional listing prices. The internal sample is small and the tool shows the live count of data points behind it rather than hiding it.

Independence disclosure

I buy eBikes, which is a conflict worth naming. Estimates are never adjusted based on whether you want an offer: the calculation uses only the constants above, and requesting an offer produces the identical number. A purchase offer is a separate figure, published as the private party range minus 30 percent, because that is what pays for the wait, the pickup, and the repairs. You are free to take the estimate and sell the bike to someone else.

Limits

This tool does not know about a custom build, a rare frame, aftermarket parts, or a local shortage of a particular model. It is a starting number for a conversation, not a guarantee of sale price.
